Construction Materials Made from Shrooms Construction Materials Made from Shrooms Architect David Benjamin walked into the offices of Arup, a structural engineering firm, with a brick in hand. It welchesnt your typical rust red, burnt clay brick. Instead, it was made largely of mushroom mycelium, grown on agricultural waste, produced by a company call Ecovative. Benjamin wanted to discuss what might be done with such a brick.Structural engineers work with architects a lot quite often we see completely crazy ideas, says Matthew Clark, who, with Shaina Saporta, was one of the two structural engineers Benjamin was visiting at Arup, NY. But this was probably one of the most crazy. Benjamin was hoping to create something for the Museum of Modern Arts Young Architects Program, a contest whose guidelines placed an emphasis on sustainability and recyclability.Ecovative conducts research and experimentation to develop customized materials for various applications. Image EcovativeExploring New MaterialsUsually structural engineers build things of tried and true materials, largely concrete and steel, whose properties are well known. Now they had two projects in one. One was normal What do we build and how do we build it, says Clark. The other was find about this material, how strong is it, and how stiff it is. Thats a lot of fun. Its not that often in structural engineering that you get to explore a completely new material.To begin the exploration, the engineers performed a rough stress test They stood on the brick. It survived the ordeal, allowing them to perform some rough calculations about capabilities. In a competition, you want the entry to be exciting, but theres no time to do the science, to know for sure if it will work, says Clark. So you stand on a brick. If you win the competition, you have a good start to go ahead and explore.As the brick had limited stiffness, Clark, Saporta, and Benjamin began to explore curved structures, cones, and cylinders, for the adde d stability they offered. The double curve they came up with, named Hy-Fi, offered maximum strength with a stiff, wide cousine resistant to wind loads, and a soaring statement that could be viewed from within and afar.When MoMA announced that the team had won the contest, the real exploration began. Clark and Saporta started working with Ecovative to make the stiffest mushroom brick possible.Ecovatives engineering team designs and fabricates custom equipment for producing new materials. Image EcovativeMaking Mushroom BricksMaking the bricks is simple enough. Mix some mushroom spores with farm waste, pot it, and let it grow. Then take the bricks out of the molds and bake to kill the mushrooms. The process gave the Arup team essentially two variables the type of agricultural waste used and the time that the mushrooms were allowed to grow. They tested six iterations with load tests at Columbia University, wind tests at BMT Fluid Mechanics, and aging tests at Advanced Metal Coatings. Fo r maximum stiffness they settled on corn stalks for waste material and a 10-day growth period. By letting them grow longer we get more of the mycelium, and the bricks have less void value, says Saporta.The final result is a mushroom brick thats 200,000 times softer than steel, 10,000 times less stiff than a typical housing brick, but capable of holding the equivalent of 50 cars.The idea of a durable but biodegradable brick is something of an oxymoron. Weather-proofing them without destroying their essential compostability was a conflict from the start. Sealing each brick in polyurethane would have solved the herausforderung completely but would have flown in the face of the concept as well as the rules. Instead, they used natural oil penetrated into the bricks. They tested the coated bricks in a domestic shower, says Clark, and found they only gained a few percentage points of mass. They dont go really soggy and flexible, he says.Those few percentage points would mean the structure would degrade over time, part of Benjamin s initial conception. In its first few weeks of existence the tower was hit with heavy rainstorms. You can see the difference, but its held up pretty well, says Clark. It can also withstand 65-mph wind gusts (the museum will just shut the courtyard if they get that high) as well as the weight of a few extra bodies. Weve seen people climb itnot advisablebut its a very robust structure.Though the mushroom brick may have its applicationsas insulation, or as the wall of a pavilionthe goal of the Hy-Fi project was to show the world that alternatives to the traditional are available with the application of a little imagination. As structural engineers we tend to be asked to design things that have to last for 50 years and at large scales, says Clark. While the mushroom brick is not directly applicable to that, its changed the way we think about materials in general. Its also remarkable from an engineering front You can mucksmuschenstill build with a material 200 times less stiff than masonry. How about when some of the jobs you have held arent relevant to the positions that you are applying for now? When job applications are online, there may be space to list an unlimited number of past positions. On other applications, you may only be able to list a certain number of jobs. How many positions should you list? And, whats more important quality or quantity? Which Jobs to Include on a Job Application There are strategic reasons to include - or exclude - certain past jobs. As a general guideline, you should focus on crafting your work history to best support the specific position you are applying to. If you have an extensive work history, it will be more difficult to represent your experience in an easily digestible form. At the same time, youll have m ore vorkaufsrechts as to which positions you choose to include. Candidates with limited experience will not have as much leeway since theyll need to present at least some evidence of past employment. The exact number of jobs to include on your applications will depend on your personal situation, but here are some suggestions to help you to decide on how to represent your unique work history in a job application best. Here are some tips for deciding how many jobs to include in job applications. Read the Directions Very Carefully Look for indications of whether employers make statements like list all past jobs. In these cases, you will be limited to following directions and should include all positions that fit within the available space.Leaving out jobs, particularly during your recent work history, could be grounds for rejecting your application. In the case where you have many jobs in your distant past that are not relevant to the job for which you are applying, you could summa rize your employment during that period. For positions more than 10 to 15 years in the past, for example, you could say, Worked in a variety of retail services positions from 1990-1995, details available upon request. Listing All Positions for a Certain Time Frame Some applications will specify that you list all positions for a certain time frame, like the past 5 or 10 years. In a case like this, you should cover all positions in that segment of time, but you can be selective about what you include in years prior. Regardless, make sure you find a way to incorporate all jobs that show evidence of critical skills or knowledge bases. If youve left out jobs that you had outside of the employers timeframe, for example, and those positions are irrelevant to the current position, you can write something like, Highlights of additional employment provided below. Complete work history available upon request. if there is a distributionspolitik on the online application for additional infor mation or notes. Keep It Short Be brief when describing irrelevant jobs that you are forced to include, or jobs that are from the very distant past. Instead of detailing duties that arent impressive, make other points.If you held an evening job at a restaurant, for example, you might say Worked extra hours to expedite the repayment of college loans. If applicable, you should also highlight promotions, awards or key successes. That way, even if the work isnt relevant, you can at least make a point about other aspects of your candidacy. Pick and Choose Which Jobs to Include If you arent directed to provide your entire work history or all positions within a certain time period, limit the number of positions to those jobs most relevant to the position youre applying for. However, be sure that you arent creating gaps in your work history. You Can List More Than Your Work History Applicants with a limited number of non-related experiences should try to incorporate volunteer an d co-curricular roles. If the employer doesnt have a special category on their application for volunteer experiences or activities, then include these experiences within the employment section. Label them appropriately, so it is clear that the positions were unpaid. For example, you could list volunteer activity as Volunteer Event Coordinator, PTA or Fundraising Volunteer, American Cancer Society. Dont Create an Employment Gap Some candidates are reluctant to leave off less pertinent positions because it would create gaps in employment but dont want to include less impressive jobs.In this situation, one option is to leave these jobs off and use the comments or additional information section to provide an explanation. This approach will make the most sense if you have an easily understandable rationale for taking time away from your career or downshifting to a less relevant, or impressive position. Perhaps you were taking courses, raising a child, or caring for a family member. K eep in mind that your cover lettermight also be a place where you can account for any disturbances in your work history. Keep Your Work History Honest Its important to portray your employment history in the best possible manner.If you can closely match your experience to the employers requirements, youll have the best chance of getting hired. When you sign (on paper or online) a job application, you are attesting to the fact that what you have listed is accurate and truthful. 10 change-leadership tips backed by science10 change-leadership tips backed by scienceIve been speaking on change leadership for over 25 years, but only recently have researchers been able to use technology like functional magnetic resonance imagery (fMRI) to look at the brain and landsee what actually happens when were facing a major organizational change.Most of our daily activities including many of our work habits are controlled by a part of the brain called the basal ganglia. These habitual repetitive tasks take much less mental energy to perform because they become hard wired and we no longer have to give them much conscious thought. So its no wonder that the way weve always done it leid only feels right, it feels good.Change jerks us out of this comfort zone by stimulating the prefrontal cortex, a section of the brain responsible for insight and impulse control. But the prefrontal cortex is also directly linked to the amygdala and thats the brains fear circuitry, which in turn controls our freeze, fight or flight response. And when the prefrontal cortex is overwhelmed with complex and unfamiliar concepts, the amygdala connection gets knocked into high gear. The result is all those negative feelings of anxiety, fear, depression, sadness, fatigue or anger that change leaders observe in their teams (and often in themselves).But if science helps explain our negative reaction to change, it also offers insights for helping people deal with changeMake the change familiar.If you show people two pictures of themselves, one an accurate representation and the other a reverse image, people will prefer the second because thats the image they see in the mirror every day. It takes a lot of repetition to move a new or complex concept from the prefrontal cortex to the basal ganglia. Continually talking about change, focusing on key aspects will eventually allow the novel to become more familiar and less threatening.Let people create change.No one likes change thats force d on them and yet, most people respond favorably to change they create and brain research shows why this is so. At the moment when someone chooses to change, their brain scan shows a tremendous amount of activity as insight develops, and the brain begins building new and complex connections. When people solve a problem by themselves, the brain releases a rush of neurotransmitters like adrenaline and this natural high becomes associated positively with the change experience.Simplify your communication.The prefrontal cortex can only deal well with a few concepts at a time. As tempting as it may be to lump everything you know about the change into one comprehensive chunk, dont do it. Your job is to help people make sense of complexity by condensing it into two or three critical goals that they can understand and absorb.Dont sugarcoat the truth.The prefrontal cortex is always on guard for signals of danger. When overly optimistic outcomes or unrealistic expectations are exposed (and by the way, they always are) the prefrontal cortex switches to high alert looking for other signs of deception and triggering the primitive brain to respond with feelings of heightened anxiety.Help people pay attention.The act of paying attention creates chemical and physical changes in the brain. In fact, attention is what is continually reshaping brain patterns. The term attention density refers to the amount of attention paid to a particular mental experience over a specific time. The greater concentration on a specific idea, the higher the attention density. High attention density facilitates long-term behavioral change. Now, one way to encourage people to pay attention is to package new ideas in continually different ways, attention-grabbing ways. A story, a game, an experience, a humorous skit, a metaphor, an image or even a song.Dont underestimate the power of emotion.According to the neurologist and author Antonio Damasio, the center of our conscious thought (the prefrontal cor tex) is so tightly connected to the emotion-generating amygdala, that no one makes decisions based on pure logic. Damasios research makes it clear that mental processes were not conscious of drive our decision making, and logical reasoning is really no more than a way to justify emotional choices. When leaders announce change, therefore, they need to go beyond logic and facts and include an appeal to the audiences emotions.In addition, remember that emotions are infectious.Like the common cold, emotions are literally contagious. You can catch an emotion just by being in the saatkorn room with someone. And since emotional leads tend to flow from the most powerful person in a group to the others, when the leader is angry or depressed, negativity can spread like a virus to the rest of the team, affecting attitudes and lowering energy. Conversely, upbeat and optimistic leaders are likely to make the entire team feel energized.Watch your body language.When your body language doesnt match your words, your verbal message is lost. Neuroscientists at Colgate University study the effects of gestures by using an electroencephalograph (EEG) machines to measure event-related potentials brain waves that form peaks and valleys. One of these valleys, dubbed N400, occurs when subjects are shown gestures that contradict whats spoken. This is the same brain wave dip that occurs when people listen to nonsensical language. So if you state that you are open to suggestions about implementing change, but as you talk about openness, you cross your arms in a closed gesture - you literally dont make sense. And if forced to choose, people will believe what they see and not what you say.Give people a stabilizing foundation.In a constantly changing organization, where instability must be embraced as inevitable, a sense of stability can still be maintained. The leaders role here is to create stability through honoring the organizations history, detailing current successes and challenges, and creating a powerful vision for the future. And, by using the term vision, Im not referring to a corporate statement punctuated by bullet points. Im talking about a clearly articulated, emotionally charged, and encompassing picture of what the organization is trying to achieve.Optimize the power of inclusive relationships.Using (fMRI) equipment, researchers found that when someone feels excluded there is corresponding activity in the dorsal portion of the anterior cingulate cortex - the neural region involved in the suffering component of pain. In other words, the feeling of being excluded provokes the same sort of reaction in the brain that physical pain might cause. The new change-leadership fundamentals emphasize inclusive and collaborative relationships. Social networks those ties among individuals that are based on mutual trust, shared work experiences, and personal connections are the foundation for organizational success. Anything you as a leader can do to nurture these mutually rewarding relationships will also enhance the change readiness within your team and throughout your organization.The biggest difference Ive seen in the requirements for change leadership is a result of the shift from the change to constant change and this is more than just semantics. Many leaders have become proficient in managing the occasional (or annual) large-scale transformation. But managers today are facing a flood of continuous, overlapping, and accelerating change that has turned their organizations upside down. His story is a testimony to the rest of us that humans can achieve great things even if their starting line in life is set a few miles back.You probably already know this but becoming an astronaut is likereally hard.On paper, almost anyone can become an astronaut. All you need is to obtain a bachelors degree in a STEM subject and have at least three years of subject-related experience. Or have at least 1,000 hours of pilot-in-command time in jet aircraft. Yet, even if in theory your high school chemistry teacher has a shot at becoming one, most astronauts have at least a masters degree or a Ph.D. in their field. Some, like Story Musgrave, have degrees even way beyond that.Still, for any given applicant, the odds of being selected are minuscule, regardless of his or her qualifications. To be fair, Hernandez was relatively lucky he didnt apply last year when NASA received the all-time record of 18,300 applications. In 2004, only 2882 people applied and he got to be one of the seven civilian specialists who made the cut.Becoming an astronaut is even harder when youre born as a son of migrant Mexican farm workers.Hernandezs childhood was so rough he even hated summer vacations. While other children looked forward to summer, he had to work seven days a week in the fields.Moreover, his education was constantly interrupted by his family having to follow the changing crops. For this reason, Hernandez d idnt become fluent in English until he was 12. Then his American teachers convinced his parents this lifestyle was hurting their education. His family finally settled down for good - in Stockton, California.But even then, they had to live in a barrio, as there was nowhere else they could afford to live. So Hernandezs life changed but not exactly for the better. Out of his four childhood friends from that area, one committed suicide, another ended up out on the streets and the other one overdosed on drugs.Wherever you are in life, you can always dream big and try to make those dreams a reality When hewas 10, Hernandezwatched the Apollo 17 moon landing on TV. It was the last mission to the moon. Thats when he began dreaming of going into space. Fortunately, he was lucky enough to have a family that supported him in achieving his dream.First, his parents. I logged into our Xfinity account to see what we were really paying for and how the price had gone up so much over the past year.In talking things over with Brad, we were willing to cut back to save some money, so I called up Xfinity to see what they could do, especially because I had discovered a major error upon logging into the back-end we had accidentally been paying for an added Showtime package for a few months that we didnt need, use, or want.When I called them up, I explained the Showtime situation and how wed just discovered the accidental overcharge. I remained friendly, patient, and appreciative throughout what turned into quite a long call, which goes a long when youre asking a company representative to essentially do you a favor.Ask If They Can Sweeten the DealOnce the overcharge situation was looked into and refunded, I asked the customer service representative what we could do to reduce our bill. We loved our service, I told him, but we really needed to cut back on our expenses. Is there any way you can help? I asked. And he put me on a brief hold to find out.Yall its that simple. When he rejoined the line, he mentioned that there was a deal currently available to reduce our bill by $20 a month if we would be willing to commit to a 2-year contract. I asked about the penalty for early termination and was told it was a mnznominal one-time fee. This was an easy Yes from us because we really dont foresee needing to change our cable and internet again anytime soon.By simply asking if there was any way for them to get us a better deal and by spending, frankly, quite a few minutes on the phone we were able to reduce expense by $24 0 a yearNow, Im not sure if it made a big difference that we did a lot of this negotiating in January when lots of companies are offering special sales, but I figure its worth mentioning, just in case.Be Fierce About Finance FeesOnce I had conquered my newspaper and cable and internet companies, I was totally hooked Up next were the big banks, which is our case consists primarily of Bank of America, where Brad and I have some checking accounts and credit cards, too.The first thing I did was call up regarding both of our credit cards and simply ask if, based on our good credit history and our long-time loyalty as customers for more than a decade, they could reduce our interest rates. A few years ago I was successful in that endeavor, but this time, I got a no on both attempts. Wah-wah.But then a few weeks went by and thanks to being all set up and organized on Mint, I was alerted via email to the fact that Brads credit card had charged him an interest paymentanda $25 late fee, even t hough he had completely paid off the card albeit a few days later than the monthly due date. I thought that was ridiculous, but kept my vocal tone pleasant, when I called up to once again express how, as longtime loyal customers, we would appreciate it if those fees could be reversed.Interestingly, the representative was kind enough to ask me an important follow-up question. He said, Was there any specific reason or extenuating circumstance that caused you to be late on this payment? Now lets be real. They were essentially telling me what I needed to say next that there was some reason behind the late payment. So I said we were out of town and dealing with some family things which, to be clear, doesnt actually impact ones ability to make a credit card payment, but whatever. Andthatwas all it took Boom fee removed. Interest charge removed.Time = MoneyThis whole experience has taught me something really valuable spending time on your finances can save you some serious coin. Within that reality, though, lies a great injustice. Because for those of us most burnt out, stressed out, and overworked its pretty unlikely that youre going to have 45 minutes to spare to negotiate your rates with the cable company. Or to ask for forgiveness from a utility company. And that irony is not lost on me.But if youre the kind of person whodoeshavetheprivilegeoftime. Your spare time on a Sunday morning might be better spent making a few of these phone calls as opposed to never ever, ever missing brunch.My new rule of thumb is to do a full financial check-up on all our monthly recurring expenses every 6 months or so and to call and ask outright if these companies can do anything to sweeten the deal for me.Because its worth the time to advocate for ourselves in bigandlittleways like this.Give it a goSo now Im challenging you take a look at your recurring expenses this month and commit to calling at least one of those companies on your list and ask about getting a better deal.
